Push open the vermilion gate at the end of the lane and the noise stays outside. Under the pomegranate tree an old man's birdcage hangs from the gallery, the radio whining out Peking opera; an auntie sits on the doorstep trimming vegetables while the neighbour arrives with his enamel mug. Beneath a square of sky, several generations share one yard and turn the days into something unhurried.

A siheyuan encloses more than houses: it encloses the ethics of four generations under one roof, and the settled patch of sky in the old Beijing heart.

Why young people fall for it

Traditions, echoed by a new generation

The siheyuan is the Chinese idea of a good life: four generations together, neighbours in sight, one family behind the gate and a world when it opens.

Historical Origins

One continuous line · back to the source

The courtyard plan can be traced to the Western Zhou; the mature Beijing form took shape in the Yuan and became the capital's dominant dwelling type under the Ming and Qing. Its layout follows ritual order strictly, expressing the ethics of senior and junior in sequence, and of inside set apart from outside.

Seasonal rites · everyday life

A siheyuan faces south with the gate at its back, laid out symmetrically on a central axis. The gate usually opens at the southeast corner, the xun position, and a spirit screen stands behind it to block the view. The north main hall belongs to the elders, the east and west wings to the younger generation, and the south row to guests or servants. Pomegranate and crab apple are planted in the yard, goldfish kept in a vat, door gods pasted up and couplets hung. Gate blocks, brick carving and painted beams carry auspicious motifs.

Cultural Significance

What the heart turns toward · handed down through generations

The siheyuan turns family ethics into space: senior and junior, inner and outer, host and guest can all be read from who sleeps in which room. It holds the living memory of several generations of Beijingers and is the physical carrier of old Beijing culture.
