A dutar string is plucked, the dap taps out the pulse, and everyone in the courtyard drifts into a wide circle. An elder leads the singing and the rest answer; a girl's skirt spins into a flower, a young man steps and lifts his brow and rolls his shoulder — there is no audience, everyone performs. Raisins and naan are passed round, and the laughter spills into the night.

Walk, and you can dance; speak, and you can sing — in the meshrep, Uyghur joy never goes home.

Historical Origins

One continuous line · back to the source

Meshrep is a traditional Uyghur communal gathering that brings song and dance, folk music, games, oral literature, etiquette and food into one occasion. It is widespread in Uyghur communities across Xinjiang.

The forms are many: festival meshrep, wedding meshrep, harvest meshrep, and the 'apology meshrep' convened to censure those who have broken community norms. It serves at once to entertain, to instruct and to regulate social life. In 2010 Meshrep was inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The gathering is presided over by an organiser called the yigit-bashi — 'head of the young men', usually a respected elder — who announces the turns and recites rhymed verses; his assistant, the mirshab, hands out the gifts of money and goods. It opens with muqam music, the company is invited into a circle, and then come the traditional games: verse duels, riddles, the passing of tea, one witty line after another.

The games carry gentle correction: those who have breached courtesy are fined a performance, and faults are admonished through humour, so that moral teaching is accomplished in laughter — this is the particular wisdom of the meshrep.

Cultural Significance

What the heart turns toward · handed down through generations

Meshrep holds Uyghur song, dance, verse and games in one place; the muqam, the dastan and the darwaz tightrope all circulate through it across generations. It has been called an encyclopaedia of Uyghur social custom.

In various places the meshrep now serves as a training ground for folk artists and reaches into scenic areas and neighbourhoods, so that this gathering which never disperses continues to keep company with everyday life in Xinjiang.
